On December 8, 2003, the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act (MMA) of 2003 was signed into law. The MMA has already shaped, and will continue to shape, the health care landscape in this country. From its creation of a prescription drug benefit for Medicare enrollees to its establishment of regional Preferred Provider Organizations, the MMA has likely affected your clients and your practice in important ways.
The goal of this program is to better prepare both counsel and those in the health care industry as they live under, and adapt to, the changes brought about by the MMA. It will feature a discussion of the lessons learned from the first year of the MMA, and the issues and challenges that must be faced going forward by all those affected by the constantly-evolving Medicare framework. The program panelists will address a number of issues that you need to know about the MMA, including:
- The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ implementation and oversight efforts on the drug card and drug benefit
- Important (and less known) provisions in the law, including: Title I & Title II, Employee/Retiree Protections, Demos, Contracting Reform, Quality Initiatives, and Program Integrity, Fraud and Abuse
- Enforcement concerns and efforts of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, including the potential fraud implications presented by the changes in Medicare reimbursement
- The impact on hospitals and other providers
- Opportunities and challenges for health plans, including changes in reimbursement levels and what remains to be implemented regarding new options for seniors.
