Biotechnology remains a major source of business growth and development for both Massachusetts and the nation. As the impact of biotech expands both economically and in the medical arenas, the positive results from increasing numbers of biotech products are experienced first-hand in medicine and agriculture.
This program, designed for both the experienced practitioner, as well as those who want to understand the area better, will provide an opportunity for you to learn more about biotech licensing from individuals who provide legal and strategic advice to different facets of the industry.
Panel discussion will include:
- Properly licensing or sharing valuable technology and rights;
- Examples of different types of licensing deals from the perspectives of different players in the market, including: start-ups, large pharmaceutical companies and universities;
- How to build value in new drugs so that biotechnology companies can maximize income from licenses;
- Schemes for protecting and licensing valuable data and other intellectual property and issues surrounding increasing value by contract pre-clinical and clinical trials;
- Case histories of successful and disastrous licensing deals, and important lessons learned;
- Managing divergent expectations of university faculty and trustees;
- The impact recent cases will have on licensing, including Laboratory Corporation v. Metabolite, currently before the U.S. Supreme Court, with potential implications for boundaries of academic freedom and the definition of patentable subject matter; and
- Planning for and dealing with disputes arising during strategic alliances.
