Sponsored by the Boston Bar Association's Public Interest Leadership Program
Serving on a charitable Board is an opportunity to contribute to a worthy cause or mission, gain experience, broaden your career horizons, and use your skills to serve your community in an area of your interest. The Public Interest Leaders of the Boston Bar Association are proud to present this engaging program that will explain everything from how to land a position on a board to the skills you will need in order to be effective.
With a focus on critical issues for non-profit trustees, experts on corporate governance and non-profit law, non-profit accounting, tax-exemption and fundraising, will take you step-by-step through the components of Board service.
This program will be particularly valuable to lawyers who have little or no significant experience serving on charitable Boards but would like to. Lawyers and non-lawyers who are already serving on Boards and want to be more knowledgeable and effective will also find this program informative.
Specific topics will include:
- How to get started - the process of becoming a Board Member
- The role of trustees in nonprofit organizations
- Key legal issues in corporate governance
- Background on tax-exempt organization rules
- Financial skills (a.k.a. "how to read financial statements if you're not an expert")
- Fundraising Challenges
- Other strategic issues in which boards are engaged from our panel of expert trustees
- How to find nonprofit organizations in need of trustees
