Take Action to Protect MA Youth

The BBA is proud to join MassEquality and other advocates on May 17th, the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia as well as the 14th anniversary of marriage equality in Massachusetts, to advocate in support of a key protection for LGBTQ+ Youth.

We recently updated you on our continued advocacy in support of legislation that would ban the use of conversion therapy by licensed providers on minors in the Commonwealth.  As attorneys, we recognize that LGBTQ+ young people should enjoy the fundamental human right to be free from harmful and ineffective “treatments” intended to change their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Eleven other States and DC already have these protections, and there is still time for Massachusetts to pass this important measure this session but the clock is ticking. Let’s ensure that the Commonwealth remains committed to equality and takes this opportunity to make the use of conversion therapy on minors a thing of the past!

You can get involved by calling your State Representative,  tomorrow, May 17,  and asking them to do two things:

  1) Contact the Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Jeffrey Sánchez, and urge him to report favorably on the Conversion Therapy Ban Bill (H.1190) as soon as possible.

  2) Contact Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo, and ask him to make H.1190 a priority and to bring the bill to a vote during the current legislative session.

MassEquality has produced a helpful phone script, a draft email, and a handy fact sheet for more information on the bill. You can also read our recent letter to the House Speaker DeLeo. As usual, the more personal you can make the outreach, the more meaningful it will be for your State Representative.

Thank you for being a member of the BBA and making the call the support this important bill, and what better day to do it than on a day when people from all over the world will mobilize in support of LGTBQ+ protections and identities!
