A Legislative Action Alert from the Boston Bar Association
Dear BBA Member:
We are asking for your help in urging your Senator to sponsor an amendment that would increase the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation (MLAC) fiscal year 2015 budget line item (0321-1600) from $13 million to $17 million. MLAC is the primary funding source for many of the civil legal aid organizations in the state.
The Senate Ways & Means Committee has allocated only $13 million for MLAC -- $4 million less than MLAC's fiscal year 2015 request. Senators William Brownsberger and Cynthia Creem will be filing an amendment (#107) this week to increase this line item to $17 million in the final Senate budget.
Please call or email your state senator TODAY and ask him or her to do two things:
- Co-sponsor Senator Brownsberger's and Senator Creem's amendment to increase MLAC funding levels to $17 million.
- Contact Senate President Therese Murray and Senate Ways & Means Chair Brewer and specifically convey his or her support for this amendment.

Thank you for all that you do to support access to justice for all in the Commonwealth.
