PILP Serves Up Manageable Pro Bono Opportunities

What if someone told you that you could make a meaningful impact on your community through pro bono work without committing countless hours of your time? On September 22nd, the Boston Bar Association's Public Interest Leadership Program (PILP) will provide local attorneys an opportunity to do just that.

Spearheaded by Colin Van Dyke of Mintz Levin and Anne Giovanoni of Alkermes, Inc., the 2010 class of the BBA's PILP is sponsoring Take a Bite: Snack-Size Pro Bono Opportunities That Fit Your Practice -- a job fair style event focusing on meaningful projects that require 10 or fewer hours of commitment.

"PILP discussed a host of alternatives to increase the number of attorneys serving those in need of legal services but who are not in a position to commit to time-intensive projects" said Van Dyke. "The job fair format will allow attorneys to get the answers the need to identify with the best pro bono option to fit their schedules"

The event will provide lawyers of all backgrounds more than 20 different time-sensitive pro bono opportunities from more than 15 organizations. Representatives will be on hand to discuss ways in which attendees can get involved in pro bono work, and what each project entails.

"By taking on a cause for just a few hours and one court appearance, volunteers would be helping someone out who would be left to his/her own to figure out a financial issue that could make a huge impact on their life" said Angelica Vargas of the Mental Health Legal Advisors Committee, one of the many organizations offering programs at the event.
