On Thursday, October 7th, the BBA's Bankruptcy Section will be holding Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Pro Bono Volunteer Lawyer Training: Representing a Pro Bono Debtor.  This event got us thinking what other things BBA members may be "training for," so we asked:

"What skill or hobby are you currently learning? "

If you would like to respond to a future Voices of the Bar, make sure you send a headshot, and contact Eric Fullerton at efullerton@bostonbar.org.

"I hope to achieve mastery of the iPad that I recently received as a birthday gift.  The graphics are stunning, the form and size elegant, and much of the interface brilliantly intuitive.  Still, after so many years of pushing the mouse and keyboard of a law office PC,  I keep reaching for things that aren't there!"

Adrienne Walker – Mintz, Levin Cohn, Ferris Glovsky & Popeo
"I’ve been cycling more this past year – it is a great way to clear your head before or after a busy day in the office and to keep fit.  Last week several of my colleagues at Mintz Levin and I participated in the Rodman Ride for Kids to support several Massachusetts child-welfare agencies including our riding team, the Robert F. Kennedy Children’s Action Corp.  It was a great way to raise money for an important cause, and the support of my colleagues and the other riders along the course made the 50 miles fly by.  My goal next summer is to ride the Pan Mass Challenge and to do my small part to support the incredible work at the Jimmy Fund Clinic . . . hopefully I’ll see a few members from our Bankruptcy Section and Mintz Levin out on that course."

I have been (for years), am now (occasionally), and will be (forever) honing to perfection my inability to play golf.

No triathlon or Cordon Bleu training for me. No - I am training as the Team Manager for my son's hockey team. It is a very different role from my day job closing deals and giving general corporate advice. Law school did not exactly prepare me for this! But like my day job, some very important people are relying me - a bunch of awesome kids with NHL aspirations, the Coach (CEO of a great company) and the Asst. Coach (Senior VP of a well-known bank). So I have to look good. Being team manager is testing all of my organizational and technology skills- which notice on which date, which league, which tournament, whose paying for which ice, etc. And it will also be a test of my hosting skills over time because Gatorade, pizza and cake are really important when you're skating this hard!  It's a little overwhelming! But I'm giving it my best. And my son is really pleased that I've made time for this.

Adam Ruttenberg – Looney & Grossman
I’d like to improve my bridge playing.  My wife and two sons learned the card game last month on vacation, and we’ve been playing it a lot.  My wife bought us a very good computer program that bids in all sorts of ways I would never have thought of.  I really hadn’t played that much since college, and it has been fun to try to get back into it.

I am currently training for the Boston Half Marathon which will be held over Columbus Day weekend. I have always enjoyed running but this is the first time that I am training for a race. When I initially signed up, I wondered if all of the training would cause me to like running less but it has actually had the opposite effect -- I have grown to love running even more! I can't wait for race day!

Pamela Smith Holleman - Sullivan & Worcester LLP
I'm currently learning to be a stage manager, assisting in a community theater production of "Crossing Delancey" at The Concord Players!  This terrific show, directed by Roxanna Myhrum, will run the first three weekends in November.  The Players is a venerable company, dating to 1856 when Louisa May Alcott began the Concord Dramatic Union.  Join us for a great time!!

Howard Berkenblit - Sullivan & Worcester LLP
I'm currently re-visiting my long-distance running skills from my high school days after over 20 years of not running regularly, and have been training for races of varying lengths - 5k, 10k and hopefully working up to a half marathon or marathon.  While I'm discovering I am not as fast as I was in my youth (when I didn't know what a meniscus was, let alone a torn one), it's been fun to get my adrenaline flowing and with each race decrease my post-40 personal bests.  It's also interesting to see how my perspective has changed - when I ran cross-country 25 years ago, it was very competitive and winning was important; now my focus is reduction of stress, cholesterol and weight!

Jordan Baumer - 3L at New England Law | Boston
I am training for a post-graduation, post-bar cycling trip with my husband.  I just recently purchased a fifteen-year-old silver, steel Peugeot touring bike and I hope to ride to Montreal and back, “credit card camping” all the way!  While I may not be at seventy miles per day quite yet, the goal is in sight!

I am currently preparing to teach the basics of handling a chapter 7 case to the good souls attending the training on the 7th. :-)  I am also continuing my training for the Tri-State Trek, an annual 270 mile bicycle ride to raise funds for ALS research.  I ride with Team America in honor of my boyfriend Steve Saling who was diagnosed with ALS 4 years ago, and who inspires me daily with his strength and courage.  In spite of having lost use of his arms and legs and his speech, Steve is currently "training" for a sky-diving jump on October 8th . . . which kinda makes the 3 day bike ride look like a walk in the park . . .
