Notice of Extension of Deadline to Apply For Vacancies on the Committee for
Public Counsel Services
The Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court have extended the deadline for
nominations and applications for appointment to the Committee for Public Counsel
Services to March 18, 2011. Several vacancies will occur in March, 2011,
due to the expiration of the terms of incumbent members.
The Committee's statutory purpose is "to plan, oversee and coordinate the
delivery of criminal and certain noncriminal legal services by all salaried
public counsel, bar advocate and other assigned counsel programs, and private
attorneys serving on a per case basis." G. L. c. 211D, § 1.
The Committee appoints or assigns counsel for indigent or marginally indigent
persons in all Massachusetts state court proceedings in which the availability
of legal representation is required by a constitutional provision, a statute or
a rule of the Supreme Judicial Court.
The Committee is also responsible for the preparation of budget estimates and
for the efficient management of state appropriations and other funds received by
the Committee, consistent with the statutory mandate to provide effective legal
representation for indigent persons.
Committee members serve for a term of three years and are generally subject
to G. L. c. 268A, the Conflict of Interest law. See G. L. c. 211D, §
1.
