On Wednesday, March 9th, the BBA's Corporate Law Committee and Mergers and Acquisitions Committee will be co-sponsoring Recent Developments in Delaware Corporate Law. With 60% of Fortune 500 Companies incorporated in Delaware, it is a well known corporate haven. That got BBA Week wondering how BBA members chose this area of the country, so we are asking:

"Why did you choose to live and work in Massachusetts?? "

Sanford F. Remz - Yurko, Salvesen & Remz, P.C.
"Not for the weather, that's for sure, especially since my skiing days are mostly behind me. Having gone to college in the area, attended law school in New York City and then begun my legal career at a large New York law firm, I made a conscious decision to return to Boston for a variety of reasons that still apply today.  Boston is a world class city with a vibrant cultural,  intellectual, religious and recreational life.  The quality of the practice of law in the city is second to none.  And, I cannot imagine a better place for my wife and I to raise our three children than in Newton.
The only drawback is that it is tough for a New York sports fan (not Yankees though) to survive in this town."

Jane Horne – Peabody & Arnold
"Even though I went to law school and then began my legal career in New York, I always knew I wanted to eventually move back to the greatest city of them all: Boston. The decision was expedited after I had my son, who I strapped to my back twice daily, as young as 3 months, for our 45-minute commute to and from work/daycare in the lovely New York City subway system. I could not get home to grandma and grandpa (my mom and dad) fast enough."

Nicole Desharnais – Nutter McClennen & Fish
"I actually grew up in Jamaica Plain and went to Boston Latin (’90) and Harvard (’94).  After college I decided to move to San Francisco to prove that I could live outside of 128.  As it turns out, I couldn't.  I enjoyed my time there for two years, but really missed the work hard/play hard Massachusetts ethic and direct nature of MA natives.  I returned to Massachusetts to attend BC Law School and never looked back."

Paul C. Connors - Hinckley, Allen & Snyder LLP
"I chose to live and work in Massachusetts for lots of reasons.  The northeast affords the benefits of: minimal natural disasters compared to many other parts of the country, being able to experience the change in seasons, and access to the ocean, lakes, mountains, and other natural environments for outdoors recreation and relaxation.  Massachusetts is very often at the forefront of new advances in the law across disciplines.  Boston is steeped in culture, yet has a dynamic energy.  The city is one of the world's foremost centers of intellectual capital and innovation, fostering a healthy environment for entrepreneurs and other thought leaders, and offering tremendous advantages to growth-minded businesses, non-profits, and other organizations."

Maria D. Buckley – Nutter McClennen & Fish
"I was born, raised and educated in Massachusetts.   For me the question is why did I stay here?  Friends, family, the ocean, the sense of history, and being lucky enough to have found the right community for me.  I like the culture, the food, the politics, the sports teams, and the level of civic engagement.   My practice is concentrated on healthcare and life sciences clients and issues.  Where better to have such a practice than in Massachusetts?"

Jeff Clopeck – Day Pitney
"I was born and raised in Framingham, went to Amherst College and Boston College Law School, and began my legal career in Boston.  I have not ventured far from the nest."

Stephen M. Kane - Rich May
"I grew up in West Roxbury and was 9 when the Red Sox had their Impossible Dream season in 1967.  After seven years at college & law school in New York, during which I suffered through Yankees’ World Series victories in 1977 & 1978 (and Bucky bleeping Dent), I happily returned to Boston to work at Rich May.   Boston is a great city to work in and Rich May is a great firm to be at. I tell my kids that Newton is a truly unique place to live.  So, I made the right choice and am very happy that I am here."

Alexander Pyle- Sheehan Phinney Bass + Green
"I chose Massachusetts for the vibrant scientific, technological and artistic communities it supports.  These communities not only create a great quality of life in the region, but also generate interesting and varied legal work."
