165 Students concluded their Financial Literacy experience this week after a
visit to the United States Bankruptcy Court in Boston and Worcester. This last
lesson, titled "Consequences" included a mock relief from stay hearing and an
initial meeting with creditors to stress the importance of paying bills on time.
Volunteers discussed with students what happens when you get into financial
trouble, highlighting penalties such as increased interest rates on credit cards
and late fees. They also discussed the impact of bad credit, how to obtain and
read a credit report, and the risk of repossession of purchased items.
