In last week's statement by the BBA applauding the House on passing landmark
alimony reform legislation, the article should have noted that lifetime alimony
will no longer be the default position for couples divorcing in Massachusetts.
Judges will continue to have that option as a possible remedy in cases of very
long-term marriages, and in discrete situations where the economic needs of the
dependent spouse and the economic resources of the paying spouse may warrant
such an outcome.
