What: The Massachusetts Trial Court will mark the
opening of the newly-built Taunton Trial Court at a special event for employees,
local officials, and area residents. Lt. Governor Timothy Murray and Supreme
Court Justice Robert Cordy are among the speakers in the program hosted by Chief
Justice for Administration & Management Robert A. Mulligan. Also
participating in the ceremony will be Bishop Michael Lunsford of the Antioch
Church International and Rabbi Anne Heath of the Congregation Agudath Achim.
Miss Massachusetts Molly Whalen will present the musical selections.
The Taunton District, the Bristol County Juvenile Court and Probate and
Family Court, and the Southeast Housing Court began operations in the new court
building in June. The spacious new courthouse features eight courtrooms, modern
information technology and digital recording capability, handicapped
accessibility, and secure detention areas, a jury pool and the District
Attorney's Office.
After on-site demolition, construction on the new building began in
October 2008 on this LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design)-certified courthouse, which incorporated energy standards into all
phases of the project – site development, design, material utilization,
practices and equipment.
The 146,000 square-foot building was designed by
Leers Weinzapfel and constructed by Daniel O'Connell's Sons under the direction
of the Massachusetts Division of Capital Asset Management and the Massachusetts
Trial Court.
