Record Setting Summer Jobs Program Will Celebrate 20 Year Anniversary at Kick-off Event

“During the summer before my junior year of high school, I participated in the BBA Summer Jobs Program…everyone there was incredibly welcoming. They cared about who I was and who I wanted to be. They asked questions and provided answers about what it was like being part of the legal profession. While I did not end up working in the legal field, it created an incredible amount of insight about what it meant to be a part of a professional community. …I encourage my kids to pursue this opportunity, because for them, this exposure can lead them to believe in themselves in ways that they had never expected.”  -- Isabel Perez, teacher, Urban Science Academy

To launch the Boston Bar Association’s Summer Jobs Program and celebrate participating students’ first day of work, the BBA will host a kickoff breakfast event on Monday, July 8th, from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at the BBA’s 16 Beacon Street headquarters. As he has done every year since he took office, Mayor Thomas Menino, one of the program’s greatest supporters, will be on hand to welcome the students, their families, and employers. Tavares Brewington (Prince Lobel Tye) will address the audience and energize the students as they head off for their first day immediately following the event. More than 100 guests are expected to attend and show their continued support for the Summer Jobs Program.

For young adults, the right summer job can change their perspective on the professional world and even the course of their future. Isabel Perez is just one of over 385 students who have participated in the BBA’s Summer Jobs Program over the past 19 years and gained the confidence and experience to pursue professional opportunities that might otherwise have seemed unattainable. Moreover, the Summer Jobs Program represents a collaborative effort between the BBA, Boston Private Industry Council, and the City of Boston to reach a diverse population of high school students and offer this opportunity to them.

This year represents a landmark for the BBA: not only is it the 20th anniversary of the program’s inception, but it also has reached a record high of 58 job placements. Of these, 13 are positions at nonprofits or government agencies funded through the Boston Bar Foundation, the charitable affiliate of the BBA, and the generous donations it has received to make this possible. The rest of the 58 jobs will provide an introduction to the legal profession in top-tier law firms and departments throughout the city of Boston; all will combine valuable educational immersion with paid employment. Generally placed in administrative roles to acclimate them to the internal operations of an office setting, students will have the opportunity to shadow highly skilled attorneys and learn about the legal field from them directly. Throughout the course of the summer, students will also complete a financial literacy program, participate in a mock hearing at City Council, tour the Adams Courthouse, and take part in other enrichment seminars.

Special thanks to Summer Job Steering Committee Co-Chairs Edward Notis-McConarty (Hemenway & Barnes) & Jeffrey Mittleman (Holland & Knight) for their careful planning and coordination, and to the firms who have committed their time and resources to accepting these students:
