MBLA and BBA Team Up to Celebrate Diversity in the Judiciary

On Thursday, November 21st, more than 100 lawyers and judges convened at 16 Beacon Street for a joint program put on by the Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association and the Boston Bar Association's Diversity & Inclusion Section. Guests at the informal reception included African American judges of the Massachusetts Trial Courts, Appellate Courts and Administrative Courts, as well as diversity leaders across Boston. See the photo album here.

A few notables in the crowd included:

  • Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court Roderick Ireland
  • Former United States Senator William "Mo" Cowan
  • Judge Serge Georges (Boston Municipal Court)
  • Judge Pamela Dashiell (Boston Municipal Court)
  • Judge Wilbur Edwards Jr. (Housing Court)
  • Judge Shannon Frison (Boston Municipal Court)
  • Judge Antoinette McLean Leoney (Massachusetts District Court)
  • Governor's Councillor Robert Jubinville
  • MBLA President E. Abim Thomas (Goodwin Procter)
  • BBA President Paul T. Dacier (EMC)
  • MBA President Douglas Sheff (Sheff Law)

The event was a smashing success, but don't just take it from us, or the photo album. Here's what newly elected Judge of the Boston Municipal Court Serge Georges and MBLA President E. Abim Thomas (Goodwin Procter) had to say:

"Having the support of bar associations like the BBA and the MBLA is important to encouraging diversity in the judiciary. Not only can you get mentorship and guidance in developing excellent legal skills in order to be positioned for judicial consideration, but you also get practical help in preparing for the judicial application process itself with application review and interview preparation, many times with former members of the JNC. I was very impressed to see the presidents of the BBA, MBA and MATA all at the event, which certainly underscores their commitment and support to a diverse judiciary as well."

"I was impressed by the incredible turnout and the enthusiasm of the crowd. Judges, bar association leaders, and lawyers at all levels of their careers had encouraging words to offer their colleagues. The event set the stage for the year ahead for the MBLA. I know we can look forward to the same enthusiasm at our other events throughout the year."

If you missed this opportunity to celebrate with the MBLA, our Affinity Bar's and the BBA Diversity & Inclusion Section, don't miss the "Mix and Mingle" Holiday Reception on Thursday, December 12 at 6:00pm.
