STATE LEADERS RALLY AROUND SHANNON GRANTS

The state’s top government and law enforcement officials came out Monday to support Shannon Grants, funds provided to help reduce gang violence and violent crime in communities across Massachusetts. The grants go toward community-based summer jobs programs, reentry programs, extracurricular activities and community policing initiatives throughout Massachusetts. Gov. Deval Patrick has proposed $15 million in his fiscal 2009 budget for the grants after vetoing an $11 million line item for this fiscal year’s budget, though that veto was overridden by the Legislature. Patrick, Lt. Gov. Tim Murray, Attorney General Martha Coakley, Secretary of Public Safety Kevin Burke, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis and various members of the House were on hand to salute the grants in Nurses Hall Monday afternoon. “Violence will not define our communities,” Patrick said to about 200 cheering attendees. The event was held to honor National Youth Violence Prevention Week.
