Boston Bar Association Praises Defeat of Constitutional Amendment

BOSTON, June 15, 2007 –  Following a vote by the Massachusetts Legislature that defeated a ballot question, which if passed, would have written discrimination against gay and lesbian couples and families into the Massachusetts Constitution, BBA President Jack Cinquegrana issued the following statement:

“In the entire history of the Commonwealth, never has the Massachusetts Constitution been amended for the purpose of enforcing discrimination.  Today the Boston Bar Association breathes a sigh of relief that the ballot question seeking to ban civil same sex marriage is dead, and we can now move on to other issues facing Massachusetts.  We are fortunate to have a Governor, a Senate President, a House Speaker and legislators who demonstrated steadfast leadership in the fight against discrimination.”
