M. Ellen Carpenter Memorial Fund Established Honoring M. Ellen Carpenter’s contributions to the bar, her commitment to community service, and her special interest in the personal and professional development of our city’s youth, the Boston Bar Foundation (BBF) announced on January 31, 2007, the creation of a memorial fund in her name. Maintained by the BBF, the M. Ellen Carpenter Memorial Fund will support the public service programs of the Boston Bar Association (BBA) that focus on mentoring Boston’s young people and creating opportunities for their personal and professional enrichment. The Fund’s first project will be establishing one or more M. Ellen Carpenter BBA Summer Jobs Program Fellowships, which will provide stipends to Boston public school students who are placed in public sector and/or non-profit legal offices. Ellen was a staunch advocate of the value of the BBA Summer Jobs Program for both students and lawyers. Her law firm, Roach & Carpenter, P.C. was the first small firm to hire a student through the program. Ellen Carpenter was the first bankruptcy lawyer to serve as BBA President, and also served as a member of the BBF Board of Trustees. She was a member of the American College of Bankruptcy, and a former Chair of the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers. Contributions to the M. Ellen Carpenter Memorial Fund are fully tax-deductible. For more information on donating to the Fund, please contact Kathleen Tighe at the Boston Bar Foundation at ktighe@bostonbar.org or 617-778-1946.
