Patent Abuse of the Federal Income Tax System?  Exploring the Limits of Patented Tax Advice
Steven J. Henry and Edmund J. Walsh, both partners at Wolf, Greenfield & Sacks, P.C., will explore the current controversy over patenting tax advice and tax compliance methodologies from a patent lawyer’s perspective.  What at first seemed like a patently absurd issue now has tax practitioners wondering whether their advice might subject themselves or their clients to potential liability for patent infringement--and perhaps whether they should seek patent protection for their own innovative tax-planning techniques.

Congress changed the rules governing MassHealth coverage of nursing home care as part of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005.  Massachusetts has implemented these changes, but done little to clear up their pervasive ambiguities.  This program will explain the changes, their ambiguities, the latest interpretations by the Massachusetts Office of Medicaid, and how to advise clients under the new and shifting rules.

This seminar will provide an overview of the important role bond financing plays in the development and financing of affordable housing projects.  Panelists will explain how bonds work and the role of issuers, underwriters, rating agencies and other parties.  Attendees will learn the differences between taxable and tax-exempt bonds and the issues that determine which type of bond financing is appropriate for a given project.  As tax credits are a typical funding source in bond-financed projects, the seminar will also give an overview of the two types of tax credits available.
