M. Ellen Carpenter Financial Literacy Program Reaches Across Massachusetts With this year’s addition of students in the Springfield and Boston suburban area, the M. Ellen Carpenter Financial Literacy Program has reached almost 200 students in seven different schools. This month, students visited the U.S. Bankruptcy Courts in Boston, Springfield and Worcester to experience the outcome of poor credit choices. Labeled the “Consequences Module,” this was the 5th in a series of seminars convened by the M. Ellen Carpenter Financial Literacy Program, a joint initiative of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court and the BBA. Following a mock relief from stay hearing in which a “debtor” had his car repossessed, the students got the benefit of a complete explanation from sitting U.S. Bankruptcy Judges Joan N. Feeney, Joel B. Rosenthal and Henry J. Boroff, Chief U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the District of Massachusetts. The students also participated in interactive discussions with bankruptcy lawyer Janet Bostwick, co-chair of the task force that developed the program. Other modules of the program include: Personal Finance, Budgeting, Using Credit, and Financing a Car. |
