What’s the Haskell Cohn Award? The Haskell Cohn Distinguished Judicial Service Award is "presented to a member of the Massachusetts judiciary, or a resident of Massachusetts who is a member of the Federal judiciary, who has distinguished himself/herself in a manner that calls for special recognition." The Haskell Cohn award was established in 1975 – with support from Mintz, Levin -- in honor of the 50th anniversary of Haskell Cohn's admission to the bar.
Haskell Cohn was a founder of the law firm of Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky and Popeo P.C. and an alum of Hale and Dorr. A tax and estate planning expert, he was President of the BBA from 1969 to 1971. He felt strongly about diversity in the legal profession. As BBA President, he helped spark a fund-raising drive to raise money to provide scholarships to students of color who might not otherwise have the means to attend law school. He urged lawyers to go beyond the narrow confines of the profession, and was the driving force behind a BBA effort to help expand the stock of affordable housing in Boston. He cared deeply about the quality of the judiciary. As Chair of the Joint Bar Committee, Haskell Cohn provided wise counsel to our governors in the judicial screening and selection process. [Haskell served prior to the creation of the Judicial Nominating Commission.] |
