BBA Applauds Proposed Modifications to U.S. District Court Jury Plan Emphasizing the need to address the under-representation of minorities in the federal jury pool, the Boston Bar Association sent a letter to the Jury Plan Committee of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts applauding the Committee’s proposed modifications to the Court’s jury plan. The letter also urges the Committee to consider further modifications in the jury plan to better ensure a fair cross-section of the community in each federal jury in this district. The proposed modifications to the jury plan came in response to the case of U.S. v. Green, where defendants challenged the composition of the jury pool, claiming that since it was taken from inaccurate resident lists, their Sixth Amendment rights were violated. The BBA submitted an amicus brief in Green focusing on what our legal system loses when people of color are left off criminal juries, particularly in death penalty cases, and supported imposing measures to ensure adequate representation on juries. |
