"How do you see the legal profession as different from other vocations?"

Ronald W. Ruth - Sherin and Lodgen LLP
“Lawyers share much with the other professions.  We all: apply our learning and experience to solve problems; enjoy the satisfaction of helping others; and struggle with the tension of adopting the efficiency of business while preserving our professional core. Unlike other professions, however, our role is being questioned. Defense of the accused, maintenance of civil liberties, and redress in the courts are cornerstones of our constitutional democracy.  Questions as to the propriety of lawyers' efforts jeopardize these rights. Lawyers must be confident and protective of their role in society and the rule of law.”

Lauren E. Darcy - Burns & Levinson LLP
“Being a new lawyer, I have found that the legal profession affords me the opportunity to face different challenges everyday, one day is never the same as the next.  There is always something new to learn, and I know that this will always be the case with the ever-changing aspect of the law.  I have also been fortunate to experience the great willingness and patience that more experienced members of the bar possess, to teach and mentor new lawyers.”

Brian T. Moore - Day, Berry & Howard LLP
“The legal profession demands devotion to clients, the legal system and society as a whole and the knowledge, judgment and conviction necessary to reconcile these often competing obligations makes lawyering uniquely challenging and satisfying.”

Nancy E. Dempze - Hemenway & Barnes
“The things that make law unique as a profession also make it rewarding.  Our duty to zealously represent our clients requires us to set high standards and put our clients’ needs first.  As counsel, we have a unique opportunity to learn about our clients and help them make wise decisions.  As advocates, we protect and fight for clients when they need us most.”
