State Tax Issues for Non-Profit Organizations
Philip S. Olsen
Please join us to welcome Mark J. DeFrancisco, Massachusetts Appellate Tax Board, and Philip S. Olsen, McCarter & English, LLP. We spend a lot of time thinking about federal tax issues related to non-profit organizations: unrelated business income, the Form 990, lobbying and political activity and intermediate sanctions, to name a few. Of course, there is a whole other jurisdiction to consider: exemption from taxation in Massachusetts. Our speakers will discuss the state and local taxes applicable to non-profit organizations, focusing on property and sales tax exemptions.
1:30p State Court Advocacy Day - at Massachusetts State House; RSVP
Amid concerns about the fiscal crisis facing the Massachusetts State Courts, the BBA and MBA urge you to attend an important State Court Advocacy event. Following remarks by Chief Justice Margaret Marshall and others, you will be asked to make personal visits to your legislators to make the case for adequate funding of the courts. As noted in the recent report of the BBA Task Force on the FY2010 Judiciary Budget, the Governor’s proposed budget would reduce funding for the judiciary by $24 million, adversely affecting the people and businesses that rely on the courts every day. Let us know we can count on your participation, and register to attend this event now.

8:30a BBA CLE: Green Initiatives in Affordable Housing - at Nixon Peabody,100 Summer Street, Boston; Register
There is a growing emphasis on the environmental performance of affordable housing projects. Many governmental authorities are incentivizing – if not requiring – green building practices to be incorporated into the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of affordable housing. Attorneys need to be well-versed in the financing tools, deal structures, and zoning incentives available to assist their clients in constructing and rehabilitating environmentally sensitive projects in a cost-effective manner. Attorneys also need to be familiar with new policies, laws, regulations and practices to keep up with the changing marketplace, particularly in light of the emphasis on renewable energy incentives in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This program will provide participants with an overview of the important fiscal, economic and environmental considerations related to affordable housing projects at the federal, state, and municipal levels.

The conference will bring together a wide array of representatives from governmental, nongovernmental, and intergovernmental organizations, including several members of the CEDAW Committee itself. Participating present and former Committee members include Shanthi Dairiam, Pramila Patten, Cornelius Flinterman, and Silvia Pimentel.
