Weil Gotshal's Boston Office Wins Firm Wide Pro Bono Competition

Joe Newberg

In recognition of its expanding pro bono footprint, the Boston office of Weil, Gotshal & Manges has won the firm's 2008 pro bono award for the most improved pro bono performance - among all 20 of Weil Gotshal's U.S. and international offices.

"We have created a culture of enablement that encourages and allows all of our attorneys to engage in pro bono activities that engage their personal interests and benefit our local community," says Joe Newberg, the pro bono partner for Weil's Boston office. "This is a win, win, win situation: it helps train and gives early confidence to our young attorneys, builds a mentoring culture by pairing our experienced attorneys with others at every level, and instills a spirit of participation in and contribution to our community."

Key to this success is an associates pro bono committee formed by Weil's Boston office that works with individual attorneys to encourage and develop institutional pro bono relationships that provide Boston opportunities for corporate transactional attorneys as well as litigators. In 2008, Weil Gotshal's Boston attorneys performed a total of 3,700 pro bono hours (over 90 hours per attorney) and worked on nearly 80 separate representations.
