Beyond Business Methods: Assessing the Impact of Bilski on Life Sciences Inventions

Charles Larsen, Ropes & Gray LLP, and Melissa S. Rones, Ropes & Gray LLP, will discuss the Federal Circuit's October 2008 clarification on the test for assessing the patentability of a process under section 101 in In re Bilski. Although the invention at issue in Bilski was a business method, this decision has implications that transcend technology area. We expect that all those whose practice brings them before the Justices of the Probate and Family, will have to familiarize themselves soon with the provisions of the new Code. C. Peter R. A bill is expected to be introduced to the United States House of Representatives which would, among other things, close gaps in enhanced voucher protection, encourage continued participation in assisted housing programs, and authorize the transfer of hap contracts from one project to another. Mr. Keene will provide a preview of the bill, together with his own analysis of the bill’s strengths and weakness.
