WilmerHale - Steve Oleskey Gets Two Honorary Degrees
 |
Stephen H. Oleskey, a partner at WilmerHale, recently received two honorary degrees – one from Northeastern Law School and one from Southern New England School of Law. Each awarded Steve with an honorary degree for his career of outstanding legal work and as a leader in international pro bono work. Perhaps most notable is Mr. Oleskey’s work in establishing habeas corpus rights for prisoners at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. He has been co-lead counsel since 2004 in the case of Boumediene v. Bush, a federal habeas corpus suit challenging the imprisonment of six men from Bosnia held at Guantánamo Bay for several years without trial. Last year, the Supreme Court announced its decision on Boumediene v. Bush, ruling that Guantánamo detainees are entitled to the right of habeas corpus. Following the first-ever Guantánamo habeas trial, five of the men were immediately freed. In addition to receiving an honorary degree from Northeastern Law School, Mr. Oleskey also delivered the commencement address to the Northeastern School of Law graduates. |
