Bingham Scores Big Pro Bono Victory
Bingham McCutchen*– working on behalf of nine pro bono clients – won a phenomenal and historic victory last week in the United States District Court in Washington D.C. Sabin Willett and the rest of the cross-office Bingham team prevailed on motions seeking the release of 17 Uighur Chinese nationals from detention at Guantanamo Bay. Last week, the government conceded that none of the Uighurs were enemy combatants, and further acknowledged that the Uighurs cannot be returned to China for fear of potential persecution. The Bingham team worked tirelessly over the past four years under very difficult security rules on behalf of the nine clients, and has devoted significant resources to this case. Last week’s victory is one about which the firm can be extremely proud. A nice footnote: Sabin got started in this pro bono effort after attending a meeting convened by the BBA’s International Law Section.
