New Guidelines, FAQs and a Model Small Business Policy have just been issued by Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation. Effective January 1, 2009 a businesses that hold personal information of Massachusetts residents will be required to comply with these regulations.

We will be joined by David Murray, General Counsel for the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation (OCABR). This forum will discuss the newly regulations requiring businesses to adopt substantial controls, including:

  • Establishing a written comprehensive information security program
  • Encrypting personal information of Massachusetts residents on laptops and removable media and in transit.
  • Inventorying all systems that may hold personal information of Massachusetts residents
  • Limiting collection of personal information to what is reasonably necessary for its original purpose, and

The regulations also require businesses to obtain certification of compliance by service providers that access information governed by the regulations.
