"What’s the most interesting request you've ever had from a client?"

Kristin Rabkin – Gesmer Updegrove
"I'm a third-year attorney, so my chances of having had conversation-worthy client requests have been minimal so far. All of my client requests have been plain-vanilla 'need this draft turned in by tonight' types. I'm still waiting to meet the rich, eccentric client who will only take meetings with me in her to-scale hobbit house. I'm still waiting for the middle-of-the-night call from a jailed client – which, as a corporate lawyer, I will be largely unequipped to handle – but I wouldn't let that stop me from rushing down to the jailhouse to speak with him. I'd meet the client at the police department and, cocking my head at a 90-degree angle like Detective Goren, say something like, 'The way you tap your fingers on the table shows me that the aggression you have toward your mother forced you to commit this murder.' And my client would say something totally unexpected and dramatic like, 'But... I was arrested for jaywalking.' Okay... maybe I'll stick to being a corporate lawyer." |

"A client once offered to pay me in the services of their chosen profession. Don't worry, it's not as bawdy as it sounds! I worked on a commercial lease for a client who was opening up a podiatrist's clinic. While I was grateful for the request, I explained that with my size 14 feet, I'd probably end up owing them money." |

"A client, who was a champion sailor, called in early August and asked if I would 'take his boat out and invite some friends along.' He knew I was going to Martha's Vineyard for vacation. I had represented him on the sale of his company several months earlier. He had always been very appreciative of my work and this just seemed like another kind gesture …but nothing quite prepared me for the surprise of standing on the dock at Edgartown Harbor with a group of my friends as this spectacular, new 130 ' Hinckley yacht rounded the corner out of nowhere headed in my direction (and interrupting a sailing class nearby). I knew how much this boat must mean to him on many levels. And to want to share it with me was incredible. Needless to say, I have been blessed with amazing clients!" |
