Bankruptcy Pro Bono Training
Join us for our annual Bankruptcy Pro Bono Training program. Attendees will learn how to file a Chapter 7 case for low-income clients and how to avoid common pitfalls.
Discussion topics will include:
- Pre-filing considerations
- How to prepare and file the case
- Debtor obligations
- Maximizing Exemptions (including declarations of homestead)
- Asset Abandonment
- The role of the Chapter 7 Trustee
- Issues that can hold up the administration of a Chapter 7 case
- Chapter 13 as an alternative to Chapter 7
Following this discussion there will be a question and answer period.
Panelists:
There is no fee for this program, but we ask that attendees put their new skills to work by taking on a pro bono case through the Volunteer Lawyers Project.

Handling Bankruptcy Pro Bono Cases

Following the first full year of the enactment of the BAPCPA Amendments to the Bankruptcy Code, panelists will share their experience in accepting pro-bono cases under the new legislation.

Attendees will learn how to file and administer a pro-bono Chapter 7 Bankruptcy case on behalf of a low-income client. The panel will work through a completed petition that illustrates many of the issues that can arise, and discuss techniques for eliciting the necessary information from the client.
