Tips on Using BBA LIST SERVE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is BBA List Serve?
BBA LIST SERVE is the electronic e-mail discussion list or list serve of the Boston Bar Association. A list serve is an email discussion list. It functions in the same manner as regular e-mail; however the single list serve address contains the email addresses of all the individual committee members, yet hides their individual addresses for increased privacy and security.
The BBA LIST SERVE list serve is intended to facilitate communication between and among BBA Health Law Section members (approximately 300) and should include messages on such topics as:
- Recent legislation, case law, and fact scenarios;
- Solicitation of suggestions, experiences, sample policies and contracts, and legal briefs or memos;
- Law office management, administrative issues, interesting websites, and "lighter" topics; and
- Position announcements.
The LIST SERVE MAY NOT be used for
- Fundraising
- Political Activity
- Doing research for non-member institutions
- Events/Programs for fundraisers or political organization

BBA LIST SERVE Protocol
BBA LIST SERVE is a communication service available to members of certain Sections or Committees of the Boston Bar Association. It allows us to expand our knowledge base by calling on the combined expertise of other attorneys. BBA List Serve is available to BBA members. The list will be monitored to ensure that people are following the protocol below.
The BBA does not monitor or edit messages before they are distributed. The BBA is not responsible for the content of the messages on this site. However, the BBA reserves the right to remove any one from the list at any time for any reason.
- Pleasant and Professional: Personal attacks, put-downs, and swearing are not acceptable. Double entendres, humor, cynicism, or slang usage should be used only with great caution.
- Identify yourself when posting.
- No Advertising with the exception of legal office position openings and citation to specifically helpful resource materials.
- Never send anything via internet that you wouldn't share with opposing counsel.
- Delete all identifiers, including headers, footers and non-relevant portions of the text if you forward outside of the group.
- Be brief and precise in your postings.
- Limit your postings to one subject at a time and include a meaningful "subject line" if your computer system allows it.
- When you have an answer to a substantive question posed or a comment about a proposed analysis, it is proper to share it with the entire net in a concise statement.
- Don't be embarrassed to ask a question or share an answer or observation. A primary reason for the net is to share resources and knowledge.
- Please don't post a message that will call upon subscribers to share their time and expertise for your use on behalf of a non-BBA member, unless a question raised about a non-member would be of significant interest to member institutions. Such questions may be posted so long as full disclosure is made of the fact that the question is being asked on behalf of a non-member.

How to use BBA LIST SERVE
How do I unsubscribe?
You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF HealthLaw " command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.BOSTONBAR.ORG.
How do I update my e-mail?
E-mail membership@bostonbar.org. You should be sure to update all of your information at this time.
You can also log onto ListSoft. However, we do not recommend this because updating your e-mail on ListSoft will NOT AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE YOUR INFORMATION WITH THE BBA.
How do I send a message to the group?
To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to HealthLaw@LISTSERV.BOSTONBAR.ORG.
This is called "sending mail to the list," because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes copies for all the people who have subscribed. This address
(HealthLaw@LISTSERV.BOSTONBAR.ORG) is also called the "list address."
Can I post a message to all the Section members?
The list serve will send a message to all Section members who agreed to be on the list Please note that messages to all Section or Committee members concerning Section or Committee programs are sent through the BBA. If you send a separate announcement about your program, you run the risk cluttering people’s e-mails.
I am not a member of the Health Law Section; can I still be included on the list serve?
No, unfortunately right now only Section members may join.
Where does my email address that is used for list serve come from?
It comes from the e-mail address you provide to the BBA.
What happens if a member posts an inappropriate message?
The BBA is not responsible for messages on the list serve. The BBA does not edit or review messages before they are distributed. However, any inappropriate use (see List Serve Protocol) may result in the user receiving a warning or being taken off of the list. BBA staff has discretion to suspend people from the list at any time for any reason for any questionable use of the list. Members will be notified that they have been suspended. Reinstatement will be determined a group of three members of the Section Steering Committee appointed by the Section co-chairs.
