Each year, thousands of lawsuits across the country are consolidated into multidistrict litigation proceedings ("MDLs") in the federal district courts. These multidistrict litigations encompass subjects as diverse as mass torts, product defects, patent infringement, and securities fraud. Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV, the newest member of the federal bench in Massachusetts, will share his perspectives from the bench and the transition from being a practitioner to a federal judge. He welcomes any and all questions from participants.

Judge Saylor has been a federal judge since 2004, having previously been a partner at Goodwin Procter LLP, an Assistant U.S. Attorney and Special Counsel and Chief of Staff and Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice.

Decline of the Massachusetts Civil Jury Trial: What does it mean and what should be done?
The number of civil jury trials in Massachusetts courts has declined markedly over past decades, such that the number of yearly civil trials in Superior Courts has declined to roughly 1/5 of the number of jury trials earlier in the century. Federal Trials have also declined. What does this mean for our justice system, and for the experiences of lawyers, judges and jurors? Should it be remedied, and how?
