Standards for the Granting of Variances: Developments in Case Law 2005

In 2005, Massachusetts courts weighed in strongly with respect to the granting of variances from the requirements of the Boston Zoning Code and similar municipal zoning by-laws. We will be hosting a group discussion of the tightening variance standard reflected in cases this year such as Van Buren v. South Boston New Housing and McGee v. Board of Appeal of Boston and the real estate communities’ reaction thereto.

Recent Developments in Eminent Domain Law: A Round Table Discussion of Kelo v. City of New London

Brian W. Blaesser, Partner at Robinson & Cole LLP and R. Lindsay Wilson II of Nixon Peabody LLP will lead a round table discussion on Kelo v. City of New London, the U.S. Supreme Court eminent domain case handed down this summer. Together they will discuss what practical effect the Court’s decision is likely to have on real estate development and how state legislatures are responding around the country, including a discussion of the bill pending in the Massachusetts legislature in response to Kelo.
