Featured Committee: Energy & Telecommunications

The Boston Bar Association’s Energy & Telecommunications Committee – a joint committee of the Business Transactions and Environmental Law Sections -- consists of attorneys working at a variety of organizations who bring diverse experience and perspective to our meetings.  Our members include: attorneys at law firms ranging in size from solo practitioners to the largest firms in the city; in-house counsel from utilities, renewable energy and start-up corporations interested in energy issues; attorneys working at state energy offices including the Attorney General’s Office, Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, Department of Public Utilities, Department of Telecommunications & Cable, Department of Energy Resources and Department of Environmental Protection; environmental non-profit agencies; and other lawyers generally interested in energy and telecommunications issues.  The Committee often co-sponsors its programs with the BBA’s Real Estate Section and other committees within the BBA’s Environmental Law Section as we develop programs and lead discussions on topics of mutual interest.

This year, the Energy & Telecommunications Committee has already sponsored the following programs:

  • September 6, 2011 – Massachusetts Energy Outlook:  Views from EEA, DPU, and DOER (Co-sponsor:  Environmental Law Section)
  • September 19, 2011 – Taking the Supreme Court’s Temperature on Climate Change Litigation:  A Recap of the Court’s Decision in AEP v. Connecticut, and a Look Ahead (Co-Sponsor:  Air Quality and Climate Change Committee)
  • October 25, 2011 – Power Plant Siting in Massachusetts (Co-Sponsor:  Air Quality and Climate Change Committee)
  • November 8, 2011 – Massachusetts Broadband Conference, held at Suffolk University School of Law
  • November 14, 2011 – RGGI: Where are We and Where Are We Headed? (Co-sponsor: Air Quality and Climate Change Committee)
  • November 15, 2011 – Lunch with DEP Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner on MassDEP Regulatory Reform and Other Initiatives (Co-sponsor: Environmental Law Section & Real Estate Section)
  • December 8, 2011 – CLE - Understanding State and Local Issues Concerning Land-Based Wind Facilities (Co-sponsor: Real Estate Section & Environmental Law Section)
A number of programs are being scheduled for 2012.  The current Co-Chairs of the Committee are Laura Olton, former General Counsel of the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (laura.olton@yahoo.com), Brooke Skulley from National Grid (brooke.skulley@us.ngrid.com), and Amy Boyd from Foley Hoag (aboyd@foleyhoag.com).  Anyone interested in joining the Committee or its Steering Committee (which meets throughout the year to plan brown bag lunches and CLE programs) is encouraged to contact any of the Co-Chairs.
