Leadership of Beacon Award Recipients Recognized Nationally

Each year, the BBA’s Beacon Award for Diversity + Inclusion recognizes exceptional leadership on diversity strategies that will have a lasting impact on the legal profession in Greater Boston.

In November, the BBA honored GLAD (Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders) and the Attorney General's Office of Massachusetts for their work as lawyers in advancing same sex marriage and for effectively expanding the meaning of Diversity and Inclusion through their effort to challenge the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). This month, GLAD’s Civil Rights Project Director Mary Bonauto has been cast into the national spotlight for her involvement in the same-sex marriage case that is now pending before the Supreme Court. Read the New York Times’ recent article on Mary’s leadership on the fight for marriage equality.

In addition, Vice President & General Counsel Mark Roellig of Mass Mutual -- who won the first ever Beacon Award -- was featured on NPR for taking a stand against DOMA. MassMutal, along with 277 other employers signed onto a brief opposing DOMA for its harmful effects on business.
