Tackling the Shift of Racial Consciousness Within the Legal Community

As part of the YWCA’s annual Stand Against Racism campaign, the BBA recently hosted “Racism & Law: The Shifting of Racial Consciousness within the Legal Community”. The event began with a keynote speech by Ruth E. Fitch, President and CEO of The Dimock Center, who then joined panelists for a lively discussion. Panelists included:

  • Moderator Rachael Rollins, General Counsel of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT); Immediate Past President, MBLA
  • Kimberly S. Budd, Massachusetts Superior Court Justice
  • Julian T. Tynes, Chairman of the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination
  • Deborah A. Ramirez, Executive Director, Partnering for Prevention and Community Safety Initiative and Professor of Law at Northeastern University School of Law

Participating organizations included: BBA’s Diversity & Inclusion Section, Massachusetts Association of Hispanic Attorneys, Massachusetts Black Lawyers Association, Mass LGBTQ Bar Association, ALPFA-Law Boston, Women's Bar Association, Massachusetts Bar Association

The event was a great success, but don’t just take it from us. Two guests followed up with BBA Week to let us know how much they enjoyed the program. Here’s what they had to say:

Gina Plata: “The panel discussed their thoughts on the ways race and law intercepted, how to combat structural and institutional forms of racism that significantly impact the quality of life for residents of color, how they defined racism and how was it to begin their practice of law at a time when there were few attorneys of color in Boston and how conversations about race/racism have changed over the years in the legal community.”

Jessica Massey: “The event was fantastic!  The discussion was wonderful and the chemistry among the panelists was outstanding.  I'm so glad it all worked out.  People had great things to say at the reception about how important it is to have these discussions, and how wonderful it was to have a cross-section of organizations support the effort.  I hope that we can make this an annual, co-sponsored event!”
