Why It's a Big Deal: IP Licensing Becoming Business Headline News

Monday, April 23, 2012 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM
Boston Bar Association - 16 Beacon Street, Boston, MA

Description:

Major competition for business has become major competition for patents in many industries including the smart phone, telecommunications and social networking spaces. This competition has been driving the licensing business in two directions:  One toward assertion licensing through litigation and the other toward a range of significant patent acquisition strategies. Some of this activity has made for unusual bedfellows. The speakers are active IP advisors in a wide range of transactions including the Nortel and Kodak bankruptcy proceedings, and are able to share some insights about these transactions as well as perspectives from the current licensing, acquisition and litigation marketplace for patents.

Topics to be discussed will include:

  • Insights from the Nortel and Kodak Bankruptcies
  • The emergence of large strategic patent portfolio acquisitions and their impact on the intellectual property markets
  • Strange bedfellows – competitive collaborations are driving transaction prices for intellectual property
  • Recent trends and developments among the patent "trolls", including the step up in aggressive licensing by patent holding companies such as Intellectual Ventures
