An Act Preventing Unnecessary Medical Debt: Policy Goals and Prospects

Tuesday, January 22, 2013 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM
Boston Bar Association - 16 Beacon Street, Boston, MA

We are now more than six years into health insurance reform in Massachusetts, but medical debt remains a significant burden for many Massachusetts consumers.  In January 2011, State Representative Jeffrey Sanchez, Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Health, introduced H. 2780, An Act Preventing Unnecessary Medical Debt.  Chairman Sanchez's bill, which he authored with input from a task force organized by Health Law Advocates (HLA), would facilitate hospital patients' participation in financial assistance programs, reduce gaps in insurance enrollment for low-income consumers and prevent certain unfair medical debt collection tactics.  Come hear Chairman Sanchez and HLA's Executive Director Matthew Selig discuss the proposed legislation and its prospects in the new legislative session.
