Fifty years ago, in the case of Gideon v. Wainwright, the United States
Supreme Court declared the 6th Amendment requires that states, like the federal
government, provide trial counsel to indigent defendants in criminal cases. To
mark the anniversary of that decision, Professor Carol Steiker of Harvard Law
School will examine the structural impediments to full implementation of the
guarantees of Gideon and address proposed reforms.
In addition to the BBA'S Administration of Justice Section & Civil
Rights & Civil Liberties Section, this program is also sponsored by the
American Constitution Society Boston Lawyer Chapter.
Please note, this program was originally scheduled for April 19th
but was postponed.
