SWMI is the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’s Sustainable Water Management
Initiative. It was created in 2010 by the Executive Office of Energy and
Environmental Affairs and included input from a wide range of stakeholders and
support from the Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), the
Department of Fish and Game, and the Department of Conservation and
Recreation. Its purpose is to reevaluate the way the Commonwealth manages
water so that there is enough for the many and sometimes competing long-term
water needs of our communities and our aquatic ecosystems.
This panel will provide an overview of the final SWMI Framework, highlight
pilot projects conducted to “test” its application, and describe the key
components of the draft regulations that will be published in early 2014.
