This training will provide pro bono attorneys with the knowledge and tools to
represent youth who are facing long-term suspension or expulsion. Topics
covered will include Massachusetts and Federal Legislation and case law
governing school discipline, including special protections afforded to special
education students in a school discipline context. Experienced attorneys will
share specific advocacy strategies for successfully navigating the school
discipline process. This training is free for participants who agree to take at
least one pro bono discipline case during this school year.
This training is open to attorneys of all experience levels, and New
Lawyers are encouraged to attend. Assistance and guidance will be
provided by the EdLaw Project, a joint initiative of the Children’s Law Center
of Massachusetts and the Committee for Public Counsel Services – Children &
Family and Youth Advocacy Divisions.
