What Every Estate Planner Should Know About Copyright Law, the Right of Termination and Royalties

Thursday, January 23, 2014 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM
Boston Bar Association - 16 Beacon Street, Boston, MA

The 1978 revision to the copyright law granted authors, artists, songwriters, and other such creators the right to terminate any transfers or assignments of rights after 35 years.  This "right of termination" can undo estate plans which do not take this into consideration, but can also provide such clients with an opportunity to realize more income from their work.  In addition, the royalty streams flowing from any licensed works can wreak havoc on even carefully designed tax and estate plans.  This session will provide a brief introduction to copyright law, the right of termination, and how to avoid problems when representing artistic client.
