Trapped Under the Sea: A Conversation about the Deer Island Outfall Tunnel Project

Wednesday, May 24, 2017 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM
Boston Bar Association - 16 Beacon Street, Boston, MA

Description:

On July 21, 1999, a team of five divers entered the Deer Island sewage-treatment outfall tunnel, a 10-mile-long-dead-end tunnel, constructed hundreds of feet below the ocean to perform a nearly impossible job.  The tunnel was one of two components of the multibillion-dollar cleanup of the Boston Harbor, then called “the dirtiest harbor in America.”  Of the five, three divers survived to tell the story. Award winning writer, Neil Swidey spent over five years drawing on hundreds of interviews and reviewing thousands of documents to write about the lives and decisions of the divers, engineers, politicians, lawyers and investigators involved in this tragedy.  As put in his book Trapped Under the Sea, “The Harrowing Story of Five Men Who Were Sent Into a Dark, Airless, Miles-Long Tunnel, Hundreds of Feet Below the Ocean, To Do a Nearly Impossible Job- With Deadly Results.” Neil will talk with David Corkum , an engineer heavily involved in the decisions on the Deer Island Outfall Tunnel Project about good-intentioned decisions gone wrong, the role of attorneys on construction projects and lessons learned.

Following the program, attendees are invited to join us for a reception.
