Appellate Speed Advocacy: How to be Effective in 15 minutes or Less

Monday, February 12, 2018 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM
Boston Bar Association - 16 Beacon Street, Boston, MA

Description:

The case you have lived with for several years—learning all of its factual and legal complexities—is set for oral argument before the Supreme Judicial Court.  You see what the time limits are for your argument, and realize you have some work to do.

The necessarily inflexible time limits on oral argument—coupled with a “hot bench” taking you off message—can present a heady challenge for an attorney not accustomed to a great deal of appellate work.  In this program, SJC Justice David Lowy and appellate practitioner Tom Reed will provide both novice and seasoned litigators with practical advice about how to be an effective oral and written advocate and maximize the limited time allotted during an oral argument at the Supreme Judicial Court.
