Addiction is a disability. While treatment for addiction is protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act and other civil rights statutes, these protections are for individuals in recovery only. Persons with substance use disorders on doctor prescribed medication based treatments, are discriminated against because of their treatment. Every day, individuals prescribed medications, such as methadone or buprenorphine, are denied access to programs, solely because of being prescribed this medication. Most individuals in the criminal justice system are denied access to their medically prescribed treatment altogether. This discrimination primarily impacts low-income people in communities of color, and is an issue at the heart of the opioid epidemic.

Join us for a discussion about the very explicit discrimination occurring within the recovery community, learn about what legal and social service advocates are doing to combat these issues, and how you can help.
