Legal Tools and Lessons Learned in Facilitating Climate Retreat & Relocation

Friday, May 10, 2019 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Boston Bar Association - 16 Beacon Street, Boston, MA

Buyouts? Rolling Easements? Transfer Development Rights?  Condemnation?  Re-thinking and re-envisioning the strategies used to support coastal risk reduction and their impacts on local neighborhoods and social justice goals are some of the themes that will be addressed by A.R. Siders, lawyer and social scientist at the Harvard University Center for the Environment. Her research focuses on climate adaptation policies, exploring how institutional structures and norms affect adaptation programs, and how those programs affect social justice and risk reduction outcomes. Siders previously authored the Managed Coastal Retreat Handbook, a collection of legal strategies and case studies, and her more recent work looks at social inequity in coastal relocation.
