Form I-9 Training & Compliance

Monday, October 15, 2018 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Boston Bar Association - 16 Beacon Street, Boston, MA

Immigration enforcement is on the rise as is evident by the 5,200 audits conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since January 2018 in what it is calling a “bold new audit initiative” to crack down on employers who violate immigration laws.  ICE is funded and ready to levy big fines for employers, big or small, not in compliance.

Too often, company execs and HR managers assume their I-9 compliance practices are in order when, in fact, their records and policies are littered with mistakes, leaving the business and its employees open to fines, lawsuits, and jail time.  To help you advise your clients to the later requirements and best practices, this session will cover the following:

  •  I-9 101: Discover the 10 essential steps to correctly fill out the revised version of the I-9.
  •  Common I-9 completion mistakes to avoid
  •  Establishing an I-9 policy that pasts muster in this enforcement era.
  • What information you should - and shouldn't - demand of applicants and employees
  •  Which documents can you review for Lists A, B, and C?
  • Should you make copies of supporting documents?
  • Where must you store I-9s? And how long must you retain them? Is it 1 year, 3 years, more?
  • How can you handle reverification in the most legally safe and efficient way possible?
  • Internal audits: What can be corrected and who should be auditing?
  • Best practices: What else should you be doing?
  • Electronic I-9 systems: What to consider when going paperless
