The Google Book Settlement: What Now?

Friday, May 20, 2011 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Boston Bar Association - 16 Beacon Street, Boston, MA

Can Google scan millions of books and, by virtue of possessing a vast digital library, have de facto power to license some or all uses of the properties in that library? Last time we looked, the parties to Author’s Guild v. Google, Inc. had hammered out a massive, game-changing agreement that would require that book authors (many of them unknown) "opt out" of the Google book settlement or be bound by it. The federal district court has now disapproved of the proposed settlement. What did the court decide, and what might happen next? Speakers Jessica Silbey, Suffolk University School of Law, and Laura Quilter, Esq., will discuss.
