Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Pro Bono Volunteer Lawyer Training: Representing a Pro Bono Debtor

Thursday, October 7, 2010 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Boston Bar Association - 16 Beacon Street, Boston, MA

The program is designed to train lawyers with limited prior individual Chapter 7 Bankruptcy experience, in order to allow them to volunteer to represent income qualified debtors as pro bono counsel. This training will assist these volunteer lawyers in gaining the knowledge and confidence to take on cases for those people who would otherwise be unable to access and negotiate the Bankruptcy Court system pro se and receive relief from crushing debt.

Discussion topics will include:
•  Pre-filing considerations
•  How to prepare and file a case
•  Debtor obligations
•  Maximizing Exemptions
•  The role of the Chapter 7 Trustee
•  Issues that can hold up the administration of a Chapter 7 case

There is no fee for this program, however attendees are required to put their new skills to work by accepting a pro bono case for an indigent debtor. The time commitment on these cases can vary, though the average commitment is approximately 15 hours.
