An American in Strasbourg: Practice Before the European Court of Human Rights

Wednesday, March 2, 2011 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Boston Bar Association - 16 Beacon Street, Boston, MA

Description:

The European Court of Human Rights hears applications by individuals and States concerning violations of the civil and political rights set down in the European Convention on Human Rights. In its 52 years of existence, the Court has issued landmark rulings on the right to life, freedom of expression, and property rights. Most recently, the Court has issued important decisions on rendition, reproductive freedom, and the investigation of war crimes. Please join us as we hear from Boston's own Natasha Lisman, a partner at Sugarman, Rogers, Barshak & Cohen, who has practiced before the Court for over three years as a volunteer with the International Senior Lawyers Project. Ms. Lisman will provide attendees with an overview of the Court and share her experiences litigating before it, including her most recent appearance before the Court's Grand Chamber on behalf of the petitioner in Sakhnovskiy v. Russia, a case that involves the right to a fair trial and access to the European Court.
